A blank page is spread before me. The time is carved out for me to craft words into a story, a glimpse into my life.
It feels like the start of a long hike. I know I will not only be elated when I arrive at the end, but I also know I will thoroughly enjoy many moments along the way.
Yes, there is a bunch of elevation gain to be had; sore muscles, sucking air, and possible blisters. That's to say nothing about bugs and sun and being thirsty.
When I look back on this journey in a couple of months those aren't the things I'll remember. It is the majestic views, tiny alpine flowers, gurgling streams, and refreshing breeze at the perfect lunch spot that will stay with me.
The only way to have those memories is to take this first step -
And then keep going.

I felt this way too when I thought of the challenge- "A blank page spread before me." I struggled last year to find different contexts to write about, but I grew as a writer. Your metaphorical comparison inspires me too- 'majestic views' when you look back at the end of it all. The impact is phenomenal.
ReplyDeleteStep by step, word by word. March will fly by. Happy Writing!
ReplyDeleteYour metaphorical descriptions are powerful, felt by us all. The wonderful thing about the end is the impact it has on one as a writer. Thanks for sharing this inspiring piece.
ReplyDeleteI wrote about a hike too! I like how you got the list of specifics on both sides of the action.
ReplyDeleteThat’s so true. My writing is the end goal but the journey blows me away, the other voices are so amazing.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree! I love how your craft so me down as a reader. It felt like I was on a hike, pacing, taking a breath, and slowing to take it all in along the way. The white space and intermixed long and short sentences really brought the feeling into this piece. Good luck - and enjoy!

What a great analogy to the SOL Challenge! It's definitely challenging, but oh, so rewarding! :)
ReplyDeleteAh, March!!
ReplyDeleteA March hike together! What a great analogy, Kristi. I look forward to seeing you along the trails.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful metaphor! Love it. Looking forward to all the stories we will share.
ReplyDeleteAgreed! What a spectacular metaphor for this challenge ... it is a lot like hiking. Happy trails and enjoy the views!
ReplyDeleteLove the idea of the beginning of SOL being like a climb! Such a perfect metaphor, hard work in the beginning, but at the end, the view makes it all worth it!
