SOLSC - MY Day

It's March - Time for the month long Slice of Life challenge thanks to Two Writing Teachers.

"Happy Birthday, Birthday Girl!" my daughter sing-songs in a chipper voice as I am in the shower this morning.

Thank God for her, as I was feeling a bit sorry for myself. I woke up at 5:28 with a migraine. Not my ideal start to any day and especially no fun when it should be 'my day'. And then I hear my husband get up and hope he will come find me and wrap me in his arms to wish me a Happy Birthday, but he starts his day with his normal routine and I don't see him until he comes down to make his smoothie, just before we head out the door.

(Deep breath. I have to realize that we have different love languages and his choices this morning have NOTHING to do with not loving me enough!)

My mom sent me a very sweet email while I was sleeping so that I had some birthday love to wake up to. Part of me thought of just crawling under a rock for the day, in hopes that my head would feel better. I didn't do that. I am at school. We are doing a 15 minute write and then posting to our blogs - all 26 of us.

When I headed back into my bedroom, following my shower, my daughter jumped up yelling, "Happy Birthday!" and she had signs she had made spread all over my floor. Yes, the fact that she took art supplies and hid in her room after dinner yesterday - coupled with the fact that the edge of her feet were covered with marker - gave me a hint that she was up to something. There were seven sets of colorful foot prints as the center point of her masterpiece. She had fun and I love that she found a totally original way to share her love.

We will see how the day unfolds. I have exchanged messages with my brother and my roommate from Semester at Sea; both share today's birthday. After school we will go to the Yanbu Flower Festival, not so much because it is what I am dying to do on my birthday, but because today is the best day in our schedule to do it. (In 2014 they broke the world record, so it is no small amount of flowers.) I expect I will be making dinner, just as I made lunches and supervised breakfast.

I do think that everyone, everywhere, should automatically get their birthday off. I realize some people would rather go to work and have the festive environment of their co-workers. For me, the perfect day would be a good chunk of alone time. When we lived in Lebanon I always got my birthday off, as today is Teachers' Day and no teacher works. (Plus school always through a dinner and dance party!)

Some years I have been able to plan special things for myself for sometime near my birthday, but this year I haven't - unless you count this weekend's camping trip. We will head out to the desert and enjoy time with friends and nature. I enjoy the quiet and the beauty and the stars. Those things are coming. I suppose I will claim them as my birthday present to myself, though not exclusively. Sometime in the next couple of week's I am using this birthday thing as an excuse for a massage and a pedicure!

  4. I was surprised when a student commented at school that his family didn't celebrate birthdays. I LOVE birthdays. In junior high, I gave a persuasive speech advocating that no one should have to work or go to school on one's birth day. Hope the day holds some more delight for you. Enjoy every moment of your pedicure and massage!

  5. Happy Birthday! You are right that quiet me-time is a wonderful present for a working mom. A trip to a desert might be an interesting birthday surprise.
