The back of a pickup
Stacked with hay bales
Eighteen inches remain
Stick in a goat
It won't go hungry!
Flashing lights from an oncoming truck
Warning, but of what?
Down a stretch and around a corner
Oh!
Caution: Camels
Caution: Camels
They could be
Walking along the road
or
Crossing the road
Crossing the road
or
Grazing near the road
Grazing near the road
But you don't want to hit one!
Flashing our lights at an oncoming truck
This stretch is
Flat, monotone, sand covered.
Over there the sea sparkles
blue and turquoise and seafoam green.
Heading up and up
Mountainous, rosey-red hued.
Down in the valley
Green! Tall grass, palm trees, and shrubs.
Green! Tall grass, palm trees, and shrubs.
What's around the next corner?
Camels?!?! WOW! What a place you live!

This place sounds truly magical - thanks for sharing a slice of it with us. I loved the format and the intrigue it inspired in me to know more!
ReplyDeleteThese are brilliant lines of verse! I have so much more of a sense of the place than I would have had from snapshots! Thank you for sharing what you observed on your drive.
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful poem! I loved all of it! It also made me want to go there and see that sea and those mountains in the distance.
