Bookcases (6/31)

  6 of 31 - SOLSC 2021

When I see a full book shelf I am drawn to peruse the titles. If this happens in a Zoom call I will pin that person's window to take a closer look. I see your heads nodding in knowing agreement.

I knew I wasn't the only one.

How to arrange all those books is a matter that could be discussed over the course of a conversation. Since we can't sit down for a cup of tea of a glass of something together I'll just ask.

How do you organize your bookshelves?

By author?
Genre?
The order you shoved them into their spot?
By topic?
By the size of the book?

I have done all of these, at some point.

There is one option I have seen that I can't imagine doing.

Any guesses as to what it might be?

It may look great, if you are wanting an artsy background, but for functionality? I can't get behind the color coding.

Anyone else?

  1. I love reading and it is exciting to see shelves full of books . It is a treat to look and browse.

  2. I have multiple bookshelves instead of one. I have them organized by topics: travel, school related, novels to keep. I have to start paring the collection down.

    1. I am with you on this. I no longer need every book I have ever read to continue to live in my home.

  3. Definitely not behind color for utility, but it does visually stun, right? I organize every bookcase differently and yet, can’t find my one copy of that book I want to loan you.

  4. What a perfect topic fir discussion! I, too, see not the eyes as the windows to the soul - but the books on the shelves! And I’m guilty of the Zoom thing. I organize each shelf or section by genre. But I keep myself frustrated when I clean up too fast and don’t shelve properly. There’s always a book I know I have but cannot find.

  5. Color coding your shelves makes no sense to me. Also can I recommend a book? "Dear Fahrenheit 451: Love and Heartbreak in the Stacks: A Librarian's Love Letters and Breakup Notes to the Books in Her Life" was a book I read last year and there were sections where she wrote about how she slipped away at parties to check out what was on people's books. I really enjoyed it and found it relateable.

As for my own shelf. It's mostly "wherever I can shove the book" but I do try to keep books by the same author/series together at least. Otherwise there isn't really a method to my madness.

    Thanks for sharing this slice!

  6. I love this question! My own bookshelves are by genre. One of my new favorite pastimes is looking at Zoom backgrounds. Thank for your this slice.

  7. I am impressed that there are so many readers who are also organizers! I have always had the messy mass of tumbled jumbled books...some lying on their sides (spine out, always) and some leaning precariously against another, waiting to see who falls first. I cannot abide any sort of obstruction to the spines, however. No doubling up on the shelf, one in front of another and absolutely no trinkets or knickknacks that would hinder a quick grab or the hasty return.

  8. I look forward to being an organizer! I'm building new bookshelves and will try to notice more before arranging my books. Thanks for this!

  9. I love that you chose to write about bookcases and how to organize them. My guess is organizing by color of the spine is an option you won't try. It looks really cool, but I'd never find anything.

  10. My shelves are organized by owner :D
So, my books are in one section, arranged by genre because that's how it suits me. My sons' books are arranged differently, and so are my daughter's. To each his own, but none of them are color-coded! I tell then to arrange in a way that if I need a book, I know where to look, which never works anyway...

  11. Great timing on this one! I get to decide all of this anew as my entire library is currently occupying the floor of our living room waiting to be shelved in our new place. The organization will be genre-inspired but with interruptions and omissions. I'm looking forward to having floor space again so genre with a mix of hurry!

    1. Genre with a mix of hurry, one I missed on my list of possibilities. :)
